The College of Arts & Media was formally created by the Board of Regents of the University of Colorado on September 21, 1989 when the UCD College of Music (at the time a small extension program of the CU-Boulder College of Music) combined with UCD’s fine arts and theatre programs, both departments in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS). The newly recognized School of the Arts, as it was then called, was temporarily placed under the administrative jurisdiction of CLAS until 1997, when the Denver campus, Boulder campus, and Presidents’ Office concurred that the school developed sufficiently in both size and vision to become the self-directed College of Arts & Media (CAM).
The name amendment from the School of the Arts to the College of Arts & Media was meant to reflect the changes in the mission and scope of educational programs within the College that occurred over those eight years, as well as future advancements. The College of Arts & Media was officially separated from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 1998, and opened its doors as the first comprehensive, undergraduate arts and media college in Colorado on July 1, 1998.
Today, the College of Arts & Media is a thriving element in one of Colorado’s most reputable academic institutions. With its core mission to intersect art, technology, and commerce, it continues to facilitate the development of its diverse student population, and takes advantage of Denver’s growing cultural institutions, such as the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, the Denver Art Museum, the Colorado Symphony, the Denver International Film Festival, the Starz Film Center, and the numerous galleries, theatre companies, and music venues that continue to thrive and mature in the Mile High City. |
